Construction has started on Syracuse’s STEAM High School, which will open this fall in the city’s old Central High School building downtown.
New pictures of construction for the $89 million project show ongoing renovations to the more than 120-year-old building. The school will include a robotics and animation lab, audio and visual production room, emulated clean room and other areas to fit the nine concentrations students can choose from.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh plans to share the new photos at his state of the city address Thursday night.
Construction on the STEAM School experienced years of delays due to the pandemic and increased building costs. Renovations may not be complete by September, city officials told Syracuse.com last fall. If that’s the case, school administrators said classes will be held in the completed portions of the building.
Applications to the STEAM School will be open until Jan. 31 to students in Onondaga, Cortland and Madison counties. The district plans to admit a class of 250 students, including 60% from the Syracuse City School District and 40% from surrounding areas.
Students can select one of the following concentrations: visual arts, entertainment engineering, performing arts, media technology and design, robotics automation, construction management, data analytics, business entrepreneurship and semiconductor microchip technology.
