CAZENOVIA, NY – For almost ten years now, Ginny and Howard Krumsiek have been running their bed and breakfast, Fernwood Farm, at 4023 Rippleton Road just outside of Cazenovia, like a finely tuned machine.
For Ginny, who grew up in the Cayman Islands, running her own bed and breakfast was a “dream come true.” She knew all about hospitality and how to make her customers happy, especially with her renowned country breakfasts she serves each morning.
Howard is her top lieutenant, taking care of the grounds and creating beautiful and tranquil outdoor spaces where their guests can relax.
“She’s the brains,” he readily admits.
It has been smooth sailing for the couple since they startedin 2017. It was the very beginning of their time at Fernwood Farm that was rocky.
They were already running one bed and breakfast in the village, the since sold Mary’s Meadow Bed & Breakfast, when Howard spotted the historic property which dates to 1874.

“No!” Ginny said when Howard first broached the subjectin 2015. “I shook my head. It was a disaster. Rooms were painted with ridiculous colors and there were shipping containers in the front yard.
“Just trust me,” Howard said confidently. “I got this.”
She did and he got to work.
Howard, a former railroad conductor with the Long Island Railroad, transformed the 5,100 square foot Queen-Anne-style house that was originally designed and built by one of Cazenovia’s early leaders, Lambertus Wolters Ledyard. Ledyard raised a prized herd of Guernsey cattle there inside 72,000 square feet of barns on the property.
It required a two-year, down to the studs renovation, including two new full bathrooms upstairs, moving walls, and adding a heated in-ground swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and ponds to the grounds.
Ginny maintains her gardens of tomatoes, rhubarb, mint, asparagus and more. She also raises chickens and bees and brings fresh produce and eggs to her dining room table.
Any apprehension was gone. Fixing up Fernwood Farm, they agreed was the “right thing to do.”
In 2017, they were ready to open.
“It is really beautiful,” Ginny said. “We have been welcoming people ever since, making them comfortable.”
Fernwood Farm is popular for weddings, class reunions, college graduations or just for a relaxing getaway.
Its new owners could easily return it to a proper family house like Ledyard did when he designed it.
Ginny loved to research its history and to decorate it accordingly.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “It feels like stepping back in time.”
Guests arrive in the front reception room, which features the beautiful mahogany staircase, tin ceiling and gas fireplace. It is currently decorated with an historic portrait of Cazenovia’s namesake that Howard bought.
“I felt Fernwood deserved it,” he said. “It was worth every penny.”
It opens into a spacious formal dining room.
A stunning 600 square foot living room can accommodate an entire family. The couple originally called it “the fridge room” because it lacked any heat when they moved in.
Today, it has both furnace heat and a woodstove.
Guests love sitting at a cute window seat which Ginny said “is a blast” to decorate during the holidays.
The kitchen features soapstone counters and stainless appliances, including a built-in oven and dishwasher.
A Viking stove is a personal favorite for Ginny.
“They do not make them like this anymore,” she said. “I hate leaving it.”
She will also miss the kitchen’s pantry.
“I tell you it is fantastic,” she adds. “Small but well organized.”
The couple keeps a large office area off the kitchen.
There are seven bedrooms in total on the second floor. Ginny and Howard have a private three-bedroom area to themselves.
Their guests can choose between four beautiful rooms, including the 600-square-foot L. W. Ledyard Suite which has a cushioned window seat, granite coffee bar with Keurig station, refrigerator and sink, private outdoor balcony at the front of the house and a 200 square foot outdoor private deck with staircase leading to backyard in-ground pool.
Guest bathrooms have double sink vanities, walk-in showers, and in-floor heating. One bathroom has a restored clawfoot bathtub.
This weekend, Ginny and Howard will enjoy Fourth of July fireworks from their backyard spot which has views of Cazenovia Lake.
They are already starting a new project, opening another rental property in the village, another “total knockout.”
“We like to keep our toes in the water,” Howard said. “It is another wonderful opportunity.”
Historic Fernwood Farm is ready for its next chapter, either as a rental or a single-family home.
It is a good thing that Ginny “trusted” her husband about a decade ago.
An open house is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
